Portraits from Kalash Valleys, Pakistan

The Kalash are a 3,000-strong animist tribe living in the mountains of the Hindu Kush, in Pakistan's wild northwest frontier close to the Afghan border.

They live in three remote valleys (Bumboret, Birir and Rumbur) near the Afghan border in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The women wear elaborate costumes including ornate headdresses, beads and belts.  During the May festival known as Chilam Joshi they wear feathers in their headdresses and even more elaborate clothes.

I photographed these women during the Chilam Joshi festival.
